About us
Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in England, dubbed the "Windsor of the North," which has been home to the Duke of Northumberland's family, the Percys, for over 700 years. The Castle's rich history is brimming with drama, intrigue, and extraordinary people; from a gunpowder plotter and visionary collectors, to decadent hosts and medieval England's most celebrated knight, Harry Hotspur. Combining magnificent medieval architecture with spectacular Italianate State Rooms, Alnwick Castle is one of the UK's most significant heritage destinations. In recent years it has also taken starring roles in a number of film and television productions, featuring as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter films and as a location for ITV's Downton Abbey.

We are very much looking forward to the opening of the Bailiffgate Hotel this summer. Located just across the road from our Iron Railings entrance, they will have the best castle views in town!
✨We are delighted that Bailiffgate Hotel has been spotlighted by The i Paper as one of the top new hotel openings to watch in 2025! ✨ The hotel's site, opposite the Barbican entrance to Alnwick Castle, has a fascinating history. Acquired by the first Duke of Northumberland in 1780, Bailiffgate House has served as a commissioner’s residence, a school, and now, it’s being transformed into a luxurious 48-room hotel with a bar and restaurant. Preserving its heritage has been at the heart of this project, and we can’t wait to welcome you when it opens this summer. Here’s a sneak peek of what’s to come 📸👇 Full article | https://lnkd.in/ea_ZNz9r #LuxuryHotels #Hospitality2025 #Northumberland #BailiffgateHotel #TravelInnovation #NewHotels #VisitNorthumberland

Join us on Friday 11th October for a special evening event as Nicola Tallis celebrates her latest book, ‘Young Elizabeth’ with us at Alnwick Castle! Queenship was by no means a certain path for Henry VIII’s younger daughter - by the time she claimed the throne, she had already endured more tumult than many monarchs experienced in a lifetime. This colourful and detailed biography charts Elizabeth’s turbulent upbringing, exploring the dangers and tragedies that plagued her early life, drawing on primary sources written by Elizabeth herself to shed new light on this iconic queen. Following the talk, Nicola will be answering audience questions and signing copies of ‘Young Elizabeth’.
